This outstanding Sterling Silver round Gau amulet box came from Eastern Tibet. Gaus were worn by Tibetans on travel journeys as protective portable shrines in which images of deities or various sacred objects were kept.
The Sterling Silver front of the box is decorated with traditional Himalayan Tibetan motifs:
Sterling Silver front was made using a technique called repoussé, when silver has been shaped by hammering from the reverse side. Backplate of the box is copper with oxidation showing its age and fitting into the reverse side of the Gau. Front side of the item is remarkably well cared for and beautifully preserved. Overall, Gau box is in fine condition showing obvious age and a fine patina. Similar round box example is in the Newark Museum of Art which has the largest collection of Tibetan Art in North America.
